PM Smart City Yojna Features: According to census 2011, 31% of the population in India resides in the urban area and contributes to 63% of the GDP. It is projected that it will rise significantly in coming years. To provide them the good quality of life, it needs comprehensive and modern infrastructure development on all fronts. Development of Smart Cities is a step forward in that direction.
Smart City Yojana is an innovative and ambitious initiative launched by Honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi in June 2015. Under the mission, Government of India plans to develop 100 smart cities. A smart city focuses on economic growth and better quality of life using digital and information technology, proper urban planning, policy change and public-private partnership.
It also aims at creating the clean and sustainable environment. The mission plans to develop existing cities and few other existing cities into places having better facilities, opportunities and sustainable living under the project.
The core infrastructure development under the smart city mission includes:
- Adequate water supply
- Sanitation and solid waste management
- Adequate facility for public transport and efficient mobility
- Assured supply of electricity
- Affordable housing to all
- Robust IT connectivity and access to digital information
- e-Governance and participation from citizens
- Clean and sustainable environment
- Access to education and health facilities
- Safety of its people, specifically women, children, and elders
Implementation of Smart City Yojana
The Yojana is for five years from the year 2015-16 to 2019-20. It may be continued thereafter. States and Union Territories covered on basis of equitable criteria. It is to be assessed and reviewed every two years and can re-allocate the project to another city.
In the first phase of the project, B grade cities will be considered and serious efforts will be made to modernize its infrastructure and other facilities. 20 Cities will be covered in the first phase; whereas 2nd phase will cover 13 other cities. The Government will bear the expenses for the project.
The Smart City Yojana is executed by Ministry of Urban Development. The Central government is to provide funding of Rs 48,000 crore over the period of five years. Every State or Union Territory will allocate the equal amount to each city and thus it amounts Rs 100 crore per year to each city that is to be developed as the smart city.
Smart City Yojana is the brightest and the most ambitious mission India has witnessed to the date. If implemented with transparency, it will develop smart cities that we all Indian can take pride in. The cities will have the modern infrastructure to match with that of finding in best cities of the world. The cities will offer best opportunities and good living standard to its citizens.
