Pongal saree dhoti gov PDSDS login: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister launched free dhoti and saree distribution scheme for the ensuing the eve of Pongal festival. In a simple function held at State Secretariat, Chief Minister O Panneerselvam formally launched the scheme by handing over sarees and dhotis to seven families on 4th January.
About 1,62,42,717 sarees and 1,62,24,223 dhotis were be distributed to the poor under the scheme. It cost about Rs 486.36 crore towards the expense of sarees and dhotis.

The free saree and dhoti scheme was the first time launched way back in 1983 by the then chief minister MG Ramachandran with a view to providing support to weavers in the state to sustain livelihood; handloom weaving is one of the major sources of livelihood in the villages of Tamil Nadu. The tradition of distributing free sarees and dhotis to downtrodden on the festival of Pongal has been continued over the years.

With a noble intention of providing good quality saree and dhoti to the poor, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister also launched the free sarees and dhotis distribution scheme for the year 2017.

Pongal is one of the most important festivals in Tamil Nadu. It is a four-days-long harvest festival, a kind of thanksgiving to nature.

It is celebrated the in month of January (usually falls on 14th or 15th January) when crops such as rice, other cereals, sugar-cane, turmeric etc are harvested. Tamil month Thai begins on the Pongal day.

Schemes such as free dhoti and saree raise spirit of festival. People belonging to poor families feel happy on getting new clothes.

Buying of sarees and dhotis in bulk also encourages handloom industry and helps sustain livelihood of the people surviving on small scale handloom weaving industries.
